Overview
This is the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) mandated Human Trafficking #3270 course offered in an online training course format for Texas Peace Officers.
Human trafficking and modern-day slavery are very real problems for the most vulnerable people on the planet, and this includes men, women, and children. The United Nations protocol defines human trafficking as the illegal trade of human beings, through abduction, the use, or threat, of force, deception, fraud, or sale for the purposes of sexual exploitation or forced labor. For many jurisdictions, trafficking in human life, like so many other issues becomes a local enforcement issue due primarily to nations failing to adequately enforce their borders. It is not different in the United States and your state. In this course we define and discuss human trafficking from the global and local enforcement perspective, discuss the various types of trafficking, and probe the legal and investigative elements of these crimes.
Please note, the entire course (including any applicable course parts), final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive four (4) hours of course credit.

Overview
This is an OSS Academy® Intoxicated Driver Management online training course offered for Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.
You are on patrol when you observe a vehicle stopping long before it arrives at the red light. Then it pulls forward and stops several times until it arrives at the appropriate stopping point for the light. Do you know, statistically speaking, what the probability is that the driver is intoxicated? Can you stop the vehicle and speak with the driver based on what you have just observed? You decide to stop the vehicle. You ask for a drivers license and observe the driver pass by the license three times before you point out to him where his license is. Having observed all of this can you ask the driver about his alcohol consumption that evening? Can you require him to perform Standardized Field Sobriety Tests or is that a violation of his constitutional rights? This course will answer these and many more questions about handling the intoxicated driver.
Please note, the entire course final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive one (1) hour of course credit.

Overview
This Community Safety (NAPPI) elective online Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) training course is offered by OSS Academy® for Texas Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.
When out in the community, the first thing you want to ask yourself is, “How am I going to stay safe today?” This is the ultimate “I” statement! Most people tend to minimize the risk to themselves either because nothing has ever gone wrong, or they think they have enough experience to anticipate a problem.
The information in this module provides a framework to keep you safer in the community and more effective when facing unique, unexpected, challenging, difficult, or even dangerous situations. We will discuss ways to anticipate problems and predict violence as well as how to create a safer community/home visit from start to finish. As we explore the content of this course, take note of the different ways you can keep yourself safe each and every day.
Has an individual ever threatened you? How did you react? Is there anything you would have done differently to handle the situation more effectively?
Many of us have been threatened at one time or another, but how did we know if the threat was real? There are some underlying theories about threats and threat assessment. This module provides insight into how to assess the credibility of a threat. The goal is to provide a framework to keep you safer and more effective when facing unique, unexpected, challenging, difficult, or even dangerous situations.
Please note, the entire NAPPI Community Safety Package course, including final exam(s) and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive four (4) hours of course credit.

Overview
This Verbal Deescalation (NAPPI) elective online Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) training course is offered by OSS Academy® for Texas Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.
Law Enforcement Officers report they have acquired relevant skills while feeling more confident after taking this course. These useful skills are necessary in today’s challenging workplace as the severity of mental health and substance use has risen at an alarming rate.
This NAPPI course includes ten modules which, taken together, will give a comprehensive training in the ongoing process of preventing violence. NAPPI’s techniques feature a behavior assessment tool that creates a common language, provides humane and effective response options, and teaches the ways to develop a culture of cooperation. Rooted in the principles of Trauma-Informed care, the Recovery Model, and Positive Behavioral Supports, a NAPPI training will empower its trainees to go into their workplaces feeling both well-informed and ready to address whatever arises.
The courses are organized into two sections, beginning with NAPPI foundations and continuing with skills for de-escalation. The foundation principles enable trainees to understand that preventing violence is an ongoing process: what you do when things are calm is just as important as what you do during times of elevating stress. In four modules, trainees will learn to recognize the meaning of behaviors and how to address them. Those Foundational modules include S.M.A.R.T. Principles, Lalemand Red Behavior Scale, Green Behavior Scale, Post-Incident Review.
The NAPPI de-escalation skills instruction includes six modules that are designed to teach trainees how to restore calm and cooperation when tension begins to elevate. It includes Making a Clear Request, Keeping a Conversation on Track, Offering Choices, Lalemand Behavioral Scale Response Options, Defusing Techniques, and Generating Cooperation.
The physical, restraint portion of our curriculum is taught live either in a public seminar or an on-site training. If interested please refer to http://nappi-training.com/ or call 800-358-6277.
Student Accolades:
Throughout my career as a Police Officer, I’ve taken classes on a variety of topics including the Use of Force. According to countless studies, Use of Force situations bring about the most injuries to Police Officers, and the most lawsuits. The Nappi Verbal De-Escalation course gives you valuable information that falls between all of the other courses offered, helping you recognize and react to threatening behavior before it becomes necessary to go hands-on. Avoiding the need to use hands-on force greatly reduces the potential of Police Officer injury and costly million-dollar lawsuits.
- James M., Law Enforcement
Based on a 32 year career dealing with public safety and nearly 20 years as a police officer, NAPPI is a critical part of the de-escalation and management of people. All people. Not just in behavioral health. Our treatment of people needs to be first priority, and law enforcement should be trained with a clear perspective on how to remember that they actually deal with human beings for a living. It's so important not to forget that.
- Brian L., Law Enforcement
Please note, the entire NAPPI Total Verbal Deescalation course, including final exam(s) and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive thirteen (13) hours of course credit.
NOTE: This is not the De-escalation Techniques: Limiting the use of Force in Public Interaction #1849 (TCOLE) course. OSS Academy does not currently offer the #1849 course.

Objective
NAPPI Foundation Modules
The S.M.A.R.T. Principles are the five fundamental skills necessary to support a culture of safety. Once these easily-understandable principles become second nature, they can be applied to any situation. Asking how current behaviors can influence future events allows trainees to eliminate challenging behaviors before they happen.
Learning Objectives:
This module will teach trainees to:
• Understand how to use the S.M.A.R.T. Principles
• Define each principle’s purpose
• Identify strategies for using the principles in various situations
• Understand the concept of Minimum Impact
The Lalemand Red Behavior Scale is an assessment tool to use with people whose baseline behaviors have escalated into a state of escalated stress. Using this tool, trainees will be able to identify behaviors, then understand what risks those behaviors present, and then determine the appropriate Minimum Impact response to take in that specific situation.
Learning Objectives:
This module will teach trainees to:
• Identify the five levels of escalation
• Recognize the behaviors associated with each level
• Ascertain the second-level messages being transmitted by those behaviors
• Isolate the appropriate staff response to each level of behavior
The Green Behavior Scale identifies areas of richness that can improve quality of life, thereby decreasing resistance and violent behaviors. Focusing on these elements diminishes the instances of escalation up the Red Scale. NAPPI’s advice to Live in the Green reflects the power of the triad that includes A Caring Community, Productivity, and High Quality Relaxation. The more these aspects of life are kept in balance, the less stress and anxiety will enter into the workplace.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Create a low stress environment
• Nurture a caring community
• Develop a culture of productivity
• Promote high quality relaxation
Post-Incident Review teaches trainees how to document incidents in a clear, objective, concise and consistent manner. The common language of the behavior scale ensures that documentation is consistent over different departments and easily-understood by everyone. There are three components of a well-documented incident, including behavior level, specific behavior, and the staff response to that behavior. The opportunity to learn and prevent future incidents exists in simply learning to complete a successful review.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Use the behavior scale’s common language to detail the event
• Employ the three components of a well-documented incident
• Create their own clear, objective, and concise documentation
De-escalation Skills
Making a Clear Request is a skill that trainees must develop before communicating with individuals exhibiting escalating behaviors. In this module, students will learn the importance of precise language and effective requests in an attempt to avoid misunderstandings and the resulting resistance. Maintaining the appropriate tone while keeping a request positive will enable trainees to avoid resistance and ambiguity in an escalation situation.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Demonstrate a simple, straightforward request
• Identify words and phrases to avoid
• Understand the importance of interacting with dignity and respect
• Recognize the benefits of positive over negative requests
• Appreciate the power of direct and observable requests
Keeping a Conversation on Track is a crucial skill for students to develop before addressing avoidant behaviors such as changing the subject, attempted distraction, or playing word games. The typical response to these behaviors is to either walk away or argue, neither of which is effective in accomplishing the original goal. NAPPI training teaches a third alternative that we call professional persistence. Trainees will learn the three techniques that it involves: planned persistence, tactful interruption, and creating an expectation of cooperation.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Employ techniques for preventing self-escalation
• Present a professional demeanor when under stress
• Use Planned Persistence to accomplish goals
• Utilize Tactful Interruption to accomplish goals
• Apply an Expectation of Cooperation to accomplish goals
Offering Choices teaches students to offer positive choices in order to replace unwanted behaviors. Providing choices has been proven to give a sense of control over a situation that often results in positive outcomes. The specific formula for offering choices, known as Choice A/B, requires persistence without being controlling and positivity of words and body language, both in order to make the choices more appealing.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Demonstrate a clear choice during a high stress situation
• Understand how to prevent escalation
• Utilize positive choices
• Comprehend the trauma-informed basis of offering choices
• Employ the Choice A/B formula
Behavior Scale Response Options will provide students with the best responses when an individual escalates. A measured response, according to the level of aggression displayed, is of absolute necessity. Students will also learn the importance of using the Minimum Impact Response, while allowing the NAPPI foundational principles to guide that response to keep everyone safe. Learning to look, listen, and test for cooperation at every level of the behavior scale will enable students to use these responses in a safe and effective manner.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Analyze behavior to determine what’s being communicated
• Employ the Minimum Impact Response
• Utilize the appropriate response at each level of the scale
• Understand the ways in which a trauma-informed approach maintains a culture of dignity and respect
Defusing Techniques will teach students how to effectively stop or prevent escalating behaviors. This can happen very quickly, and it is important to intervene as quickly as possible, while maintaining a calm and respectful demeanor. Preventing a potential crisis can come down to something as seemingly small as eye contact. The mode of approach and positioning is important in the safe implementation of NAPPI techniques including Presence, Fake Misunderstandings, Confusion, Positive Reinterpretation, Calm and Soothing, and Soft Shock in the restoration of an atmosphere of calm and safety.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Employ the six defusing techniques
• Assess a situation before approaching
• Approach safely and position themselves during a confrontation
• Select a technique based on communication, personal style and situation
NAPPI’s Green Behavior Scale
Generating Cooperation teaches students an approach designed to avoid resistance and encourage cooperation. Used with people on the lower end of the Red Scale, the objective is to avoid hearing no by assessing when a person is ready, willing, and able to cooperate. The verbal and non-verbal techniques for generating cooperation include a pleasant approach, positive requests, offering choices, using cues, assessing for resistance, and accepting positive responses and moving forward.
Learning Objectives:
This course will teach trainees to:
• Approach and assess signs of cooperation
• Determine the appropriate timing and mode for requests
• Utilize the most effective techniques
• Avoid an initial lack of response
• Identify signs of resistance

This is an OSS Academy® Officer-Involved Shooting Survival online training course offered for Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.
No event creates as much trauma for an officer and their department, as an officer-involved shooting that involves use of deadly force against another person. A department's response to an officer-involved shooting has an unbelievably huge impact on the officer's future emotional and psychological well being. How an officer eventually resolves the shooting incident emotionally and psychologically is dependent upon his or her ability to respond appropriately to the stressors of the incident, the subsequent investigation, and the post trauma stress indicators. Are you and your department prepared to be survivors after an officer-involved shooting incident? This course is a guide for properly handling such a traumatic incident.
