Crime, disorder, and associated problems can be more effectively addressed in small geographical areas, such as an officer’s patrol area or beat. Studying the characteristics of problems in an area helps officers to apply resources and responses that can reduce and solve those problems. Individuals who commit crimes or civil violations often make choices based on opportunities presented by physical and social characteristics of their immediate area.
This course offers law enforcement officers tools to creatively solve problems by collaborating with community groups, who, by manipulating physical and social factors, create harder targets, which make it less likely for people to act offensively. You will also be exposed to problem-solving and solution-oriented policing, which bring together local authorities and people in the community in collaborative efforts to eliminate community problems in both real world and cyber communities.

You are dispatched to a shots fired call at 2:00 a.m. You arrive at the scene and observe the lights are on at the residence, and the front door is open. You cautiously approach the open front door, and are able to observe a body lying on the floor in a pool of blood with what is obviously a fatal head wound. Your backup arrives, and together you search the residence and determine there is no one else present. Would you and your partner know how to safely clear the scene while being mindful of the need to preserve the evidence it contains? Would you know what you contaminated, disturbed or moved, and can you document it? Would you know how to establish a proper ingress/egress path for other responders to follow? This course will answer these and many more questions about managing a major crime scene resulting in the successful apprehension and prosecution of an offender.

Custodial interrogation of suspects and the statements and confessions that are elicited are vitally important in the development of criminal cases. However, to be admissible as evidence, statements and confessions must be given freely, voluntarily, and with due consideration for the suspect’s right to silence and right to counsel.
This course focuses on what you as the investigator can and CANNOT do during interrogations to ensure that the due process rights of suspects are followed. This course also provides several interrogation techniques that are effective throughout the law enforcement profession. You will also learn the strengths and weaknesses of each technique.

Criminal investigations often begin at the location(s) where the crime was committed. The Crisis Communications course is designed to provide additional information required to become a more proficient emergency telecommunicator. This course is one of the required courses for obtaining an Intermediate Certificate.
Today, approximately 85% of the U.S. is covered by a 9-1-1 system. The movement toward more egalitarian relationships between men and women has had a major impact on our cultural patterns of behavior, even though our society’s patriarchal view still has tremendous influence on gender perceptions and roles. For example, most all cultures treat boys and girls differently from birth. Because of this cultural diversity, the different genders tend to have different experiences, expectations, worldviews, and interests.
Awareness of gender diversities can help us understand why men and women often see things differently, and avert possible miscommunications as a result of these natural and societal differences.
