Overview

This is an  OSS Academy® Rifle on Patrol Tactics online training course offered for Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.

Policing worldwide has undergone major shifts in the last 100 years. There is better selection and training of officers, better policy development, and shifts in type and effectiveness of the equipment we now use. Nothing illustrates this more than the shift by law enforcement agencies internationally to the use of shoulder fired weapons. This course will guide law enforcement managers and officers through the issues surrounding the decision to arm patrol officers with rifles. It addresses and identifies rifles suitable for enforcement use, and discusses tactics that can be implemented when officers respond to various threats. Also discussed is the federal program that allows agencies to acquire rifles and equipment from the U.S. Government without charge.

Please note, the entire course final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive one (1) hour of course credit.

Risk & Safety Management in Law Enforcement #7821
Long Course Description

Overview

This is the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) elective Risk & Safety Management in Law Enforcement #7821 online training course offered for Texas Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.

A new era of police reform has increased public attention to liability costs of law enforcement, specifically in cases of misconduct settlements and risk management policy. Though the overall number of claims against law enforcement has been relatively flat in the previous decade, the cost of misconduct settlements has increased dramatically.

As a part of the broad continuum of reforms currently underway throughout the country, departments and municipalities are taking a close look at their risk management strategies to control liability costs.

In this course you will learn the many aspects of risk management and how law enforcement across the country works toward mitigating the losses that result from litigation.

Please note, the entire course, final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive four (4) hours of course credit.

Overview

This is an OSS Academy® Roadblocks & Checkpoints online training course offered for Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.

Law enforcement officers assigned to patrol public roads have a general duty to protect the public. Officers may be assigned by supervisors to support the establishment of a planned checkpoint, or participate in a roadblock in search of a criminal suspect or for some other reason. As officers, we know the 4thAmendment guidelines regarding search and seizure generally require officers to have reasonable individualized suspicion to stop or spot check persons and vehicles for the primary purpose of detecting evidence of ordinary wrongdoing. In this course, we will discuss how the reasonable suspicion requirement is balanced with the need to protect the public in general, or to apprehend a suspect, and how this can be accomplished safely.

Please note, the entire course final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive one (1) hour of course credit.

Robbery Response for Banks
Long Course Description

Course Number
OSS-RRB-PO

Price (Shown in U.S. Dollars)
15.00

Overview

This is an OSS Academy® Robbery Response for Banks online training course offered for Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.

Bank robberies accounted for 72 law enforcement officer deaths since the 19th century. Contrary to television shows, bank robbers killing law enforcement officers is not glamorous. Bank robberies are costly to officers even in the 21st century. The magnitude of devastation created by just one single officer death is heartbreaking. The problem has become even more exasperating as the FDIC insurance program creates a societal impression that these are victimless crimes. This course discusses the need for organizational planning, policy development, and equipment for responding officers. It also discusses who has primary investigative responsibility, if the financial institution is insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation [FDIC].

Please note, the entire course final exam(s), and course evaluation(s) must be completed in order to receive one (1) hour of course credit.

Overview

This is an OSS Academy® School Resource & Security Officer online training course offered for Peace Officers, Jailers, and Telecommunicators.

The roles of a School Resource Officer [SRO] and a School Safety Officer [SSO] are dynamic. SROs and SSOs wear multiple hats, and work in a predominantly community-based environment, our schools. Working day-to-day with school administrators, teachers, students and parents can be difficult, and requires a proper foundation that begins with understanding these unique roles in a school setting. This important course is designed to further develop such a foundation for an effective SRO-SSO program. It introduces and discusses some of the federal precedents that apply, and the latitude of an officer whose duties on campus necessarily combine safety with juvenile behavior within the law. If you do not regularly patrol a campus, this course provides you with important information about campus enforcement operations, should you be directed to respond to a school emergency.

Do you know what is required to have a search warrant issued in your jurisdiction? Do you know how to execute the warrant? Are you familiar with required time constraints, inventories, and returns? Failure to perform all of these steps properly can result in all of the evidence you obtained being dismissed, and possibly even criminal or civil charges against you.
