If you’ve ever considered a career in law enforcement, becoming a Texas Peace Officer is a fulfilling path that requires dedication and the right training. At OSS Academy®, we are excited to assist you through every stage of this process by providing essential information and training opportunities.
Step 1: Meeting Basic Requirements
To begin your journey toward becoming a licensed peace officer in Texas, you must meet the specific eligibility requirements set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). These requirements include:
- Meeting the minimum standards for enrollment and initial licensure.
- Successfully completing the Basic Licensing Course.
- Passing the state licensing examination.
- Obtaining an appointment by a law enforcement agency.
Step 2: Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) Options
Once you meet the eligibility requirements, the next critical step is completing the Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC). This training program can be completed in one of two ways:
a. Full-Time Academy Program
This option typically requires 18-20 weeks of classroom and hands-on training, available at accredited training academies throughout Texas. Full-time programs are ideal for those looking to complete certification in a relatively short time frame.
b. Part-Time or Night Academy Programs
For individuals balancing work or personal commitments, part-time and night programs offer the same curriculum as full-time courses, but with more flexibility in scheduling. Completion time varies depending on the academy.
Both options cover critical law enforcement topics such as criminal law, defensive tactics, firearms training, and ethics.
At OSS Academy®, we would love the opportunity to teach the Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) in an online format to provide even more flexibility. However, no training provider is currently allowed to offer the entire BPOC online under current TCOLE regulations.
Step 3: Passing the TCOLE Licensing Exam
After completing the BPOC, the next step is passing the TCOLE state licensing exam. This exam tests your knowledge of Texas law enforcement procedures and ensures that you are ready to enter the field.
Step 4: Obtaining Your License
Once you have passed the TCOLE exam, you will be eligible to apply for positions with law enforcement agencies across Texas. Upon appointment by a law enforcement agency, you will become a licensed peace officer.
