TDD/TTY for Telecommunicators #3812 (TCOLE) Now Online!

The hearing and speech impaired often use a communication system called TTY (Text Teletypewriter or Text Telephone) to communicate over conventional or cell phones. Also in common use are TDD (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
In practical terms TTY and TDD are used interchangeably and refer to any type of text-based telecommunications equipment used by a person who does not have enough functional hearing to understand speech, even with amplification.
As technology advances, smartphones are a popular way for the hearing impaired to communicate. However, when that is not an option (for example, calling 911) the primary way to communicate is through a TTY system or a relay service. It is important for telecommunicators to understand how these systems work in order to communicate efficiently with someone who is hearing or speech impaired.
